Project Spartan is a new browser from Microsoft that will replace Internet Explorer in the next iteration of Windows. Spartan is still in the beta phase of its development so even at official release, the browser could come with a big bunch of bugs and issues. To get it under control beforehand, Microsoft has announced that anybody who can hack the new browser will be paid cash by Microsoft.
With cash for hacking and finding security loopholes, Microsoft is trying to avoid any negative press for its new browser when it launches with Windows 10. Retiring Internet Explorer is a big decision and no wonder the company is anxious to have it all go smoothly.
Microsoft is offering up to $15,000 for hackers who can prove that remote code execution is possible on the new browser. The payments start at $500 for those who discover ASLR info disclosure vulnerability. The program will run from 22nd of April to 22nd of June with different payments offered for different security flaw discoveries in the browser. For anyone who wants to give the hacking a try, they will have to install the Windows 10 Technical Preview.
Microsoft says in a blog post:
"Microsoft is also offering up to $100,000 USD to bypass active mitigations (such as ASLR and DEP) in the company's latest released version of the operating system, and a bonus of up to $50,000 USD for actionable defense techniques to the reported bypass".
What's interesting is that the ending date of the bug discovery period is pretty close to July, which is the date that the AMD CEO accidentally mentioned for the release of the Windows 10. So is Windows 10 really going to be released in 3 months? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
