Android Oreo is now available for beta users

Google rolled out Android Oreo for beta users as part of a developers preview to test out on their phones.

Set to officially release in December 2017, Android’s Beta Program is only compatible with Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Pixel C, Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL for now.

The biggest development that this new version of Android is expected to bring about is where the apps can only make a sound alert once per second and a notification dot showing a preview of what the notification is about.

“Notification Dot is a new way for developers to indicate that there’s an activity in the app,” said Dave Burke, vice president of Android Engineering.

Google is bringing Picture-in-Picture mode which lets you watch a video while using other apps. Once you’re done watching the video, simply swipe it away and it will be gone.

The logo that was in the shape of an Oreo now looks just like a cookie with hidden Easter eggs.

This version of Android is expected to arrive first for Google’s Pixel and Nexus devices followed by other Android carriers. No date is given yet as to when Samsung devices would get an update.
