LTE the answer to exceptionally growing mobile data traffic

The data revenues of cellular mobile operators (CMOs) reached Rs47 billion during the year under review, showing a growth of 47.4% YoY. The data traffic has escalated by 19.3% overall in the telecom sector and 40% in voice traffic due to increased subscriptions and competitive bundle offers provided by the cellular services in Pakistan. These cellular companies have taken notice of the explosion of social apps usage in Pakistan and are offering lucrative offers that include daily, weekly and monthly plans for internet usage, which is also a major contributor to data traffic. Consumers are moving from voice call trend towards to mobile data trend because of apps such as Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter.

There has also been a substantial increase in the imports of mobile handsets worth US $544 million, an indication of the consumers opting for Smartphones with features like email, instant messaging, video and voice calls. The consumers are opting for Smartphones with smart apps to ease their lives on the go and to keep themselves updated with global trends. A Smartphone also provides a window for the consumer to mix their social and business activities. These Smartphones at a time were costly to obtain, but now telecommunication companies, banks and manufacturers are providing discounts and installment offers with 0% markup that make obtaining a Smartphone easy.

The aggregate effect of increase in subscriptions, bundle offers, internet packages, social apps, email and smartphones have created an entire segment of mobile data traffic that is worth monitoring and it because of such factors networks are looking in to 3G and 4G networks. This will not only be a source of revenue for the cellular companies but will also generate employment in the economy, contributing positively towards Pakistan’s GDP.

In lieu of this GPRS/edge supported network, Pakistan has entered in an era of Next Generation Wireless Networks (NGWN) commonly known as 3G and 4G networks. These NGWNs are going to innovative all services across a national platform, including but not limited to financial, business, information, social, and education and entertainment services. In addition to these, there will be superior voice communication and faster bandwidth will make video calls possible. Having a 3G network is a big step for Pakistan, as it means faster internet than Edge/GPRS services, clearer voice calls and a superior experience in mobile finance, entertainment, education, social and business services.

However, Fourth Generation LTE networks will revolutionize the entire process of mobile payments and banking. It will also provide superior voice call quality; the download speed will be faster and video quality clearer. One of the leading telecom operators Warid Telecom has recently launched LTE services in Pakistan and became the first operator to transform from 2G to LTE technology. This transformation will help ease the data traffic being generated from social and business apps but will also update and revolutionize the entire system and lifestyle of Pakistan. The network will be ten times faster and more responsive than a 2G or 3G network as the LTE technology is designed to reduce latency. Video chats and conferences will facilitate social and business lives of a consumer. Introduction of LTE by Warid will also create an influx of investment as software companies will begin to develop apps that are facilitated by LTE networks, which will also generate employment.

In short, our lives will be hard to picture without Next Generation Mobile Networks in the coming future. The introduction of LTE is going to revolutionize and uplift the entire social, economic and financial state of affairs in Pakistan. Pakistan can infact boost its ideas and conceptualization of progress with the help of LTE and in few years make these concepts a reality. These Networks can act as a catalyst that will bridge the development gap between Pakistan and First World Countries, if utilized accurately.

Nokia to stage a smartphone comeback in 2016?

Nokia may have dropped out of the smartphone market in a less than fitting manner for a former market leader, so it might not be too surprising to hear mutterings about a return to the industry as its binding deal with Microsoft draws closer to an end. According to sources briefed on Nokia’s plans who spoke with Re/code, the company is not only planning to re-join the phone market, but also has a range of ambitious technology projects in the pipeline.
Nokia Technologies, the smallest of the three business left after the Microsoft buyout, is apparently at the head of this push for new products. This division licenses out the company’s gargantuan patent portfolio, but also designs and licenses new products, including the Z Launcher and the N1 tablet.
According to insiders, the Z Launcher and N1 tablet are just the beginning
Former Nokia executive Richard Kerris says that people will be blown away if some of the stuff he has seen in development ever comes to market. But the fate of Nokia’s internal designs are being kept close to its chest and there’s a big difference between interesting designs and products that will thrive in the market.Nokia Technologies has apparently been working on phone and tablet products outside of the Windows Phone space, and also has ideas for virtual reality technology, among others. The unit appears to be scaling up its operations, hiring former Dolby Labs executive Ramzi Haidamus and longtime Cisco executive Guido Jouret.
Late last year, Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri declared that Nokia would not be directly returning to the consumer market, but that the brand would reappear in the consumer world. Therefore, Nokia will most likely stage a potential comeback through strategic agreements and design licensing, rather than direct manufacturing. Nokia has already “lent” its brand to Foxconn, which produces and sells the Nokia N1 tablet in China, and we may see more deals like this in the future. Not only does this play to Nokia’s strengths as a development and licensing company, but also avoids the costs and risks associated with manufacturing and marketing in the highly competitive mobile market.
The Nokia N1, designed by Nokia but manufactured by Foxconn, suggests how the company may re-enter the smartphone business.

For now though, Nokia is prohibited from selling phones under its own name until the end of the year and from licensing out its brand for use with phones until Q3 2016, according to the contract with Microsoft. However, once the licensing deal comes to an end, Nokia designed and branded smartphones may make a reappearance on store shelves, although likely with a different company manufacturing them.
Nokia itself has said that it is “expanding into exciting new areas … with a focus on enabling the human possibilities of the connected world”, but we’ll have to wait and see exactly what the company has in store for us.

Huawei Announces P8, Its New Flagship Smartphone

By Gulshan Naz: Huawei has decided to pull off an Apple in its latest flagship launching. The company announced, not one, but three new phones, two of them being capable flagships. The first one among them was the Ascend P8.
It is good to see that Huawei has placed more emphasis on the details rather than just specs here. The display is a 5.2” IPS LCD panel with 1080p resolution. Crucially, there are almost no bezels alongside it. The design is cool-looking too, with a 6.4mm frame and full aluminium unibody.
The camera is also a major part of the package. It is a 13 megapixel sensor, but is the first in a smartphone to use four types of sub-pixels: Red, Green, Blue and White, which help with the brightness and also in low-lighting conditions. There’s OIS with just anti-shake degree of just 1.2 degrees. Then you have a discrete DSLR-quality image processor and a true-tone flash and you know that these people are serious about this. Oh, and unlike the iPhone 6 Plus, there is no bump at the back.
Underneath, you get Huawei’s own Kirin 935 64-bit processor with 4 Cortex-A53 chips clocked at 2 Ghz and another four at 1.5 Ghz. Accompanying it is 3 GB RAM and 16 or 64 GB worth internal storage. MicroSD is supported in the second SIM card slot, of up to 128 GB.
Connectivity includes 4G LTE, NFC, Wi-Fi+, Signal+ (which adds two antennas, one at top, another at bottom to the phone) and GPS. Battery is said to last 1.5 days on heavy usage. The phone will be offered in four color options.
Huawei has also added a few nice tricks. You can bang your knuckles on the display twice to take a screenshot, or you can crop a section to select part of the snap. There’s also a Director Mode which allows four P8 owners to record a video simultaneously. There is a terrific e-ink cover accessory which adds a low-energy 4.3” display to use in sunshine, which is quite cool.
The phone will be available for 499 Euros for the base 16 gig version, or 599 Euros for the 64 GB version. It will be available in the coming few weeks.

Huawei Snapto Is A Solid Entry Level Smartphone

Huawei has announced a new smartphone to compete with the Moto G smartphone in the new SnapTo. Offering the same internals, the SnapTo comes with a larger display and 4G LTE.
The front packs a 5″ display with 720p resolution. The OS running on it is the aging Android 4.4 KitKat on top of Emotion UI 2.3, which is probably the largest drawback of this phone.
Underneath, you get a 1.2 Ghz quad-core processor with Snapdragon 400 chipset and Adreno 305 GPU. Coupled with it is 1 GB worth RAM and 8 GB expandable storage, with microSD up to 32 GB.
At the back is a 5 mp camera with LED Flash and 2 GB worth RAM. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and 4G LTE, which is a plus for any phone at this price range. Battery capacity of this phone is set at 2,200 mAh. The phone will be available in either Black or White.
The pricing of the phone is set at $179.99, which is quite fine for a phone of such specs, although Snapdragon 410 would've been more welcome. For this price, it can give the Moto G a tough competition, but may fall behind due to its preloaded bloatware.

Huawei Snapto Specifications:

  • CPU: 1.2 Ghz quad-core Cortex-A7
  • Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 400
  • OS: Emotion UI 2.3 with Android 4.4 KitKat

  • Design: Plastic, Black or White
  • Display: 5" with 720p resolution
  • Memory:
    • RAM: 1 GB
    • Internal: 8 GB
    • Card slot: expandable by up to 32 GB
  • Camera:
    • Primary: 5 megapixel with LED Flash

How is the World’s First Ubuntu Phone Different from Android, iOS and Windows?

By Gulshan Naz: The world's first Ubuntu phone – the Aquaris E4.5 – has arrived and it will be available through a series of flash sales in upcoming weeks. I've previously written about the specs and details about the sales, read it here. Here I'll be talking about the difference this Ubuntu phone brings to the smartphone scenario.
Why the new smartphone players don't succeed?
The current smartphone market is ruled by Android and iOS, and this market doesn't allow the new players to establish themselves. It has been a long time since Windows Phone was launched and it is yet to make a significant user base. The problem that engulfs the aspirations of newer operating systems is the need of an efficient and supportive app ecosystem. Without apps, users won't support the new OS. The Linux-based open source OS Ubuntu tries to tackle this problem in a different manner.
The world's first Ubuntu phone won't be having apps. Instead, the Aquaris E4.5 will be having a new user environment called Scopes.
What is Ubuntu's Scope and what's new about it?

Jane Silber, CEO Canonical calls the first Ubuntu smartphone a "significant milestone." It will feature Scopes – Scopes are contextual home-screen dashboards which are a lot simpler and faster to develop than the usual intrinsic apps. Scopes are kind of a reinvention of mobile user interface by presenting a faster way to access the important services like social, music, internet, pictures etc. They do it by putting the content from different providers together on a single screen. The photo Scope will feature pictures from your phone library as well as the Picasa and Flickr web albums – all on the same screen.
"Ubuntu presents users with an entirely different way to engage with their devices – Scopes guide you to content you want – in the same way you think about it – to deliver a smooth, engaging experience," says Cristian Parrino, VP Mobile of Canonical.
While all the operating systems depend on the apps to interact with users and provide them services, Ubuntu has tried to offer them something different. Forget all the sugar-coated terms like material design, tiled layout, and whatnot; Ubuntu has tried to provide something different in a real sense with Scopes. Apps offer different content on different screens, whereas user just wants to access the information provided by the apps.
How is it beneficial for developers?
Canonical has tried to go with the Scopes by keeping in mind the flooded smartphone market. Developers are busy making apps for Android and iOS which account for about 90 percent of all the devices. Parrino says that Scopes can be developed with a fraction of the cost of conventional app developing. It is simple to make new Scopes with an easy to use and cheaper user interface toolkit.
Right now, it has managed to score some well knows partners like Facebook, Twitter, eBay, Yelp, Grooveshark, SoundCloud, Amazon, Dropbox, Spotify and Time Out. This has been possible due the tag Canonical and Linux attached to it. It's clear that Canonical will rely heavily on a vast and dedicated community of Linux coders for more Scopes.
What to expect from the world's first Ubuntu phone?
Ubuntu is a whole new concept and Canonical is targeting the developer and open-source enthusiasts with this phone. I won't expect this to top the sales or break any records. Instead, it will show how tired of the app interface the users are.
Alberto Mendez, CEO at BQ says: "Ubuntu is a totally different concept in mobile operating systems and we are proud of the fact that our customers will get to enjoy it before anyone else in the world. At BQ, we support diversity in operating systems because it brings positive benefits for the technology sector and also for the user, who has the freedom to choose."

LG G4 is Going to be Revealed on 28th April

By Gulshan Naz: LG's latest flagship will be unveiled on April 28th, the smartphone maker has announced. The teaser poster announcing the date also revealed an improved camera with f/1.8 (up from f/1.9), dual-tone LED Flash and laser autofocus. There will also be a leather back cover.
Earlier, it also unveiled the update skin dubbed UX 4.0, which brings UI improvements and a few new features, including Camera Manual Mode and Smart Notice. The former gives you further control over the pictures you capture. A feature called Quick Shot allows you to take photos by double-tapping the back button.
Smart Notice tracks your activity as you spend more time with the phone, and provides vital info accordingly. Further specifications are not exactly confirmed but we already know them as a result of several leaks.
The display of the phone is a 5.5″ QHD display, which was unveiled by LG earlier this month. It comes with 120 percent color gamut, 30 percent increase in brightness and 50 percent increase in contrast. All this without an increase in power consumption.
Underneath, you get a Snapdragon 808 processor (no 810 this time), 3 GB RAM, 16 mp main camera with 4K video and 8 mp 4K front shooter.
The phone has all the potential to become a bestseller, even if its processor is a bit lacking. Stay tuned for more info on the G4.

Subor S3 is the World’s First Bezel-Less Smartphone

It wasn't a big name but an emerging phone manufacturer from China named Subor who have realized a concept design phone by coming up with a bezel-less device. The phone is named the Subor S3.
The idea definitely sounds intriguing but a phone without any side bezel is sure to be accident prone. Tests and experience has shown that bezels are the shields for phone screens. Traditional flat displays are rigid unlike flexible displays so it's yet to be seen whether Subor has come up with a way to strengthen the phone's screen.
In terms of specifications, the phone is not a top-end phone but a rather decent mid-range device. Physically, the device comes with a three capacitive keys and the renders do show a very small, almost non-existent side bezel.
On the hardware side, the phone is powered by a MTK6732 quad-core SOC with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of on-board storage expandable by 64GB via micro SD card. The display is a 5-inch 720p model. The screen is not a 1080p one but that might prove to be useful as the device is very slim and comes with a 1700 mAh battery. The phone comes with a duo of cameras including an 8MP rear camera with a f/2.0 aperture.

Subor S3 Specifications:

  • CPU: Quad-core 1.3 Ghz Cortex-A53
  • GPU: Mali T760
  • Chipset: 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615
  • OS: Android 4.4 Kitkat
  • Supported Networks: 2G, 3G, 4G LTE
  • Design: Bezel-less design
  • Display: 5" with 720p resolution
    • Scratch-resistant glass
  • Memory:
    • RAM: 1 GB RAM
    • Internal: 8GB
    • Card slot: expandable by 64 GB via microSD
  • Camera:
    • Primary: 8 mp with 1080p video, HDR and Flash
    • Secondary: 5 mp
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 4.1, GPS with GLONASS, LTE
  • Battery: 1,700 mAh
  • Price: 220 US Dollars
The phone comes in black and white varieties and costs $225 and is already up for sale. Whether the phone is a hit or not but Subor has definitely earned itself a name in the market as an innovative manufacturer.

Lenovo A7000 Price in India Confirmed as Rs. 8,999

By Gulshan Naz: Lenovo on Tuesday launched the A7000 smartphone in India, pricing it at Rs. 8,999. The "mass flagship" smartphone will be available from April 15 exclusively via Flipkart, and registrations for the first sale kick off at 2pm IST on Tuesday itself. It will be available in Onyx Black and Pearl White colours.

Adding details about the flash sale method, Lenovo said users would have a 4-hour window to complete their transaction. Lenovo also said the Rs. 8,999 price tag is to make the Lenovo A7000 a budget-friendly offering. Initially unveiled at MWC 2015, the Lenovo A7000 was then given an MSRP of $169 (roughly Rs. 10,400).

The A7000 is the successor to the company's popular 4G/ LTE budget offering, the Lenovo A6000 , and features upgraded specifications as well as a larger display - pegging it as a multimedia device.

The Lenovo A7000 supports dual-SIM (Micro-SIM) while running Android 5.0 Lollipop with Vibe UI running on top. It features a 5.5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) IPS display and packs an octa-core 1.5GHz (MediaTek MT6572M) processor with 2GB of RAM.

The A7000 features an 8-megapixel autofocus rear camera with LED flash and a 5-megapixel front facing camera. Internal storage on the handset is 8GB, which is expandable via microSD card (unknown capacity). Connectivity options on the smartphone include 4G/ LTE (FDD Band 1, 3, 7, 20; TDD Band 40), Wi-Fi, GPS/ A-GPS, Bluetooth, and Micro-USB, just like its predecessor.
The Lenovo A7000 is backed by a 2900mAh battery, measures 152.6x76.2x7.99mm and weighs 140 grams. We'd spent some time with the smartphone at MWC 2015, and found the smartphone was geared towards an audience that consumes a lot of multimedia content with its big 5.5-inch screen and Dolby Atmos technology built-in.

The A7000 is the first Lenovo phone running Android 5.0 Lollipop we have lain our eyes on. Of course, Lenovo has slapped its proprietary Vibe UI skin on top of it. The notifications shade and the multitasking menu are lifted directly from vanilla Android.

At the event, Lenovo added to the India sales statistics for the Lenovo A6000 it had shared on Monday, says that the 180,000 handsets (out of 300,000 sold since its launch in India) it had sold via flash sales were sold out in 24 seconds cumulatively.

Speaking about the promised Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Lenovo A6000, the company said the Q2 release time-frame may be delayed. It added it would not roll out the update until it was completely bug-free. It did not provide a revised release time-frame however.

Samsung Suffers from Galaxy S6 #Bendgate

BY GULSHAN NAZ: Samsung must be regretting sending all those cheeky tweets to Apple, making fun of their iPhone 6 Plus BendGate controversy. Looks like karma has struck back and now Samsung is the one eating its words. They claimed their phone would not suffer the same weaknesses as the iPhone 6 Plus but guess what, they do.
SquareTrade is a well-known phone insurance company which specializes in warranties for gadgets. They used their bendbot machine to test and see how much weight it would take for an S6 to stop working and bend completely.
It didn't come as a surprise when the S6 bent at 110 pounds of force. It is also the same amount of force which resulted in the bending of the Iphone 6 plus. The interesting part is that the phone was completely destroyed at 149 pounds while the iPhone 6 plus can withstand it till 179 pounds.
Galaxy S6 bent at 110 pounds of force, the same amount of force which resulted in the bending of the iPhone 6 Plus
Samsung has not denied those claims by Square Trade. Their only rebuttal is that 110 pounds is higher than normal forces of up to 66 pounds in the back pocket. The company further states that if the pressure is applied to the back, the smartphone can withstand a higher force. This is why Samsung has asked Square Trade to do the test again which targets both the front and back side.
Apple can let off a sigh of relief knowing that it isn't the only company with a chink in its armor. Both companies have made the mistake of making their phones too thin which makes it easy for the phones to bend. Apple contained the negative press by taking journalists on a rare tour of an iPhone testing facility to allay their fears. Samsung's rebuttals are not enough to address the fears of consumers and it seems like they will have to do something similar.
In a nutshell, all the latest phones from the mobile giants will bend if you apply pressure to it. It is just the more successful models which will be in the limelight. As long as you are not a plus size person who keeps a phone in his pocket, your phone will be safe. At the end of the day, you need to treat your devices properly. That means no bend tests at home.
